With a little over five weeks to go until The Lowestoft Players take to the stage with our all singing, all dancing production of Elf The Musical, we had a chat with the lady behind the scenes who is responsible for pulling together all of the musical numbers.
Catherine Oldman has taken on the massive role of Musical Director for this production.

Playing the keyboard since she was just seven years old, Catherine took to music like a duck to water or should we say like an Elf to Christmas? Catherine has been teaching music for over 25 years. She currently teaches online and from her home in Oulton Broad, where she lives with her 15-year-old daughter, Emily. Her youngest student is four and the eldest eighty-four.
Having been the Musical Director for the Lowestoft Players for We Need a Little Christmas in 2022, Catherine was the obvious festive choice for Elf The Musical.
So how does one go about being a musical director for a big production, we asked Catherine?
“When everyone else was busy putting their Christmas decorations back in the loft I started listening to the music for Elf!” Catherine explained.
“I set about recording individual rehearsal tracks for cast members to use to learn their parts. As well as ensuring that the vocals sound great, it is important the cast feel as confident as possible. The music in the show is fantastic and will appeal to the audiences young and old. Just spread some Christmas cheer by singing loud for all to hear!”
Fortunately Catherine “just loves” Christmas and she told us that rehearsals so far have been filled with fun and laughter.

What will Catherine’s role be whilst the show is running?
“The audience won’t see me” she replied.
“I’ll be somewhere hidden from view, conducting the show. We have a wonderful production team, cast and crew. ELF the Musical is going to be a fabulous show.”
Elf will be performed at the Players Theatre, Lowestoft from Friday 29th to Sunday 1st October and Friday 6th October to Sunday 8th October 2023.
