The King wishes to absorb western knowledge but is confused as to how he can reconcile western ways with his own and is further hindered by his chief minister who wishes to keep western influence out of the court. A slave girl named Tuptim - a gift from the King of Burma - arrives and is befriended by Anna who lends her a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin which Tuptim transforms into a Siamese ballet "Small House of Uncle Thomas". The ballet is presented at a great state dinner given in honour of the English Ambassador. After the performance Tuptim tries to escape with her lover, Lun Tha, but she is caught and Lun Tha is killed. Anna urges the King not to punish the girl but, in his anger, he starts to beat her. However, due to Anna's influence, he cannot do so and, unable to face the shame, he hides himself away and his health declines. Anna, thinking that she can no longer be of use, is about to leave Siam when she is told that the King is dying. She decides to stay in order to help his young son, Prince Chulalongkorn, to rule the people of Siam. List of Characters
