AUDITION INFORMATION...
List Of Female Character Roles
MARIA RAINER
A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey and the focal role made famous by Julie Andrews. A strong actress with excellent singing ability. Playing age 20's - early 30's.
THE MOTHER ABBESS
Wonderful character role. Playing age could be anything from 40 or above. A strong actress with excellent solo singing ability. Has to perform 'Climb Every Mountain' which ends both Act 1 and 2.
SISTER BERTHE
Mistress of Novices. Some solo singing requires ('Maria') Any age.
SISTER SOPHIA
Some solo singing required ('Maria') Any age.
SISTER MARGARETTA
Mister of Postulants. Some solo singing required ('Maria') Any age.
FRAU SCMIDT
Housekeeper to the von Trapp family. A stern character role with no required singing. Playing age 40+
ELSA SCHRAEDER
Captain von Trapp's future wife. A gem of a role requiring sophistication and style. Playing age 30+. Required to sing one duet with Max in Act 1.
LIESL
Captain von Trapp's eldest daughter. Playing age 16. Strong acting and singing ability essential. Some solo singing required and the ability to move well/dance would be a bonus. (NOTE: If the role is cast to someone 16 years or over, then the performing restrictions that apply to the rest of the von Trapp children do not apply and one Leisl will be cast)

FEMALE COMPANY
A mixed range of skills are required here to play a wide range of characters throughout the show. Nuns, Postulants, Austrian Townsfolk, Party Guests, Travelling Players and Festival Contestants. Strong singing ability is a priority as the vocal work for the Nuns is particularly challenging, however, the female company will also require some members with good acting skills and dance/movement abilities.
List Of Male Character Roles
CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAPP
Austrian Naval Officer and Widower. Father of 7 children. Runs his household and family as if he were still on board ship. Falls in love with Maria and she with him. Looks, stature, charisma and strong acting skills are essential to create the right chemistry between these roles. Playing age 40+. The ability to sing is also a requirement. ('Edelweiss' - solo sung during Act 2)
FRANZ
Butler to the von Trapp household and supporter of the Nazi party. Nice character role. Playing age 40+. No singing required in this role.
ROLF GRUBER
Young Telegraph boy (Playing age 17) and love interest for the 16 year old Leisl. Becomes a member of the Nazi Party in Act 2. Strong acting and singing skills are essential. (Duet with Leisl)
MAX DETWEILER
Flamboyant impresario and organiser of the Salzburg Festival. A wonderful character role with comic overtones. (A role that is usually underplayed) Foil for both von Trapp and Elsa. Ability to sing as he performs a duet with Elsa in Act 1. Playing age 40+.
(Note: The following cameo roles appear within the show and allow the flexibility of performers to play more than one character role)
HERR ZELLER
Authoritative German and member of the Nazi party. Scripted character role. Playing age 30+
BARON ELBERFELD
Austrian supporter of the Nazi party and neighbour to von Trapp. Playing age 30+ (any age)
ADMIRAL VON SCHREIBER
German Admiral. Appears in Act 2 only. Playing age 50's+

MALE COMPANY
A male company of approximately 8 performers is required to play a wide range of characters throughout the show. The above 3 character roles, plus Priests, Austrian Townsfolk, Party Guests, Travelling Players and Puppeteers, Festival Contestants and Nazis.
