THE ORIGINAL SMASH HIT MUSICAL
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a story based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1948 novel, Tales of the South Pacific, this musical is considered to be one of their best.
ROMANTIC PLOT South Pacific originally erupted onto the Broadway stage 60 years ago, back in 1949 and very quickly became one of the greatest musical entertainments of all time. Its story deals exhilaratingly and romantically with the dramas of the American Marines on an island in the South Pacific during the Second World War and the love story of a native French planter, a widower with Polynesian children and an American Nurse from “Little Rock”, who is unable to accept the colour of his children.
HIT SONGS The musical was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won all of them, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Libretto. This Multi Award Winning musical is constantly revived and overflowing with great songs. South Pacific features arguably one of the most beautiful scores ever written and boasts a succession of hit songs. Out of 15 musical numbers 12 became major hits around the world including "Bali Hai", "Some Enchanted Evening", "Happy Talk", “There Is Nothing Like a Dame”, "Younger than Springtime", “This Nearly Was Mine”, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and "I'm In Love with a Wonderful Guy" , which have become worldwide standards.
The show continues to be a critical and box office hit and has enjoyed many successful revivals and tours and spawned two films. The most recent West End production was in 2001/2002 at the National Theatre and it is currently a smash hit on Broadway all over again.
Having previously presented South Pacific back in 1994, the Lowestoft Players present a stunning new revival of this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
